All for art’s sake

first_imgJust when you thought baking couldn’t get any trendier, up steps Tate & Lyle, sponsor of “the world’s first-ever edible art exhibition”! Cake Britain ran from 27 to 29 August at The Future Gallery in London and Tate & Lyle used the event to mark its switch to Fairtrade sugar. Can the disparate worlds of baking and art mix, we ask? Well, exhibits such as “the lyrics to The Futureheads track The Chaos, created in 940 rock and roll cookies by Miss Cakehead with a ’suede effect’ by sprinkling finely ground Tate & Lyle Fairtrade sugar over still-wet icing” do have a certain ring to them. Not impressed so far? Well how about the Cloud Cuckoo Wedding Cake by Stuart Semple and Paul Baker, which depicts “two lovers entwined in cloud cuckoo land, a rock candy mountain, a wedding for Brangelina and a sky of edible happy clouds”? No? While it all sounds a bit pie in the sky to us, STW has to admit that, with proceeds going to the Fairtrade Foundation and two other charities, the intention was laudable.www.facebook.com/welovebakinglast_img read more

All Fellows Forum holds first panel

first_imgThe first All Fellows Forum, a new monthly panel series that  aims to bring graduate students together to discuss topics of shared interests with an interdisciplinary approach, was held Thursday.Speaking up · Graduate students Laila Shereen Sakr (left) and Maytha Alhassen discussed the usage of the term “Arab Spring.” – Chris Pham | Daily TrojanAbout 50 students and faculty came to “New Perspectives on Islam and the Middle East,” which focused on issues related to events that have transpired in the region during the past few months.Meredith Drake Reitan, assistant dean of graduate fellowships, said she organized the new forums to bring students in the graduate school together.“The goal of these events is to foster a community of interdisciplinary scholars,” Reitan said. “We’re interested in new approaches and bringing students together from all over the university to think about issues from a variety of angles.”She also said this series is a chance for the students to become more involved while giving them a “really strong push toward interdisciplinary work.”The university has several interdisciplinary programs in place at the graduate level, and the program is designed to connect them within the university, Reitan said. The monthly forums bring together university-funded fellows to discuss a variety of topics in a scholarly and social environment.“I hope it is something that will last the students long after USC,” Reitan said. Two graduate students and one professor discussed the ways they collected information about current events in the Middle East and the conclusions they drew from that research at Thursday’s forum.Laurie Brand, USC professor of international relations, said hearing stories from people in the Middle East would help outsiders better understand their culture and that she hoped her work would propel scholars to go to other countries to do similar work.Maytha Alhassen, a graduate student of American studies and ethnicity, said social media allows people to represent themselves publicly in a way that the media would otherwise skew.Laila Shereen Sakr, a graduate student in the School of Cinematic Arts, said using social media, such as Twitter hashtags, is a valuable way to learn about current events from primary sources.“[This forum] is precisely what we had in mind when we conceived of the series,” Reitan said. “The turnout was great.”last_img read more

JuJu Smith-Schuster drafted by Steelers in second round

first_imgWide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster became the second USC player selected in the 2017 NFL Draft on Friday, as the Pittsburgh Steelers took last season’s leading Trojan pass catcher in the second round — No. 62 overall. The Long Beach, Calif. native recorded 3,092 receiving yards in three seasons at USC, seventh-most in program history. Smith-Schuster became the first Trojan wideout drafted since Nelson Agholor went No. 20 overall to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015.Smith-Schuster announced his arrival at USC as a true freshman in 2014. Smith-Schuster — back then simply JuJu Smith — reeled in four catches for 123 yards in his collegiate debut against Fresno State, and he would go on to finish the season with 714 yards and five touchdowns through the air, which were both second most on the team.He followed that season up by almost doubling his aerial output as a sophomore. Bearing a new name, Smith-Schuster racked up 1,454 receiving yards — the seventh-highest single-season total in USC history — en route to first-team All Pac-12 honors. He closed the book on his Trojan career with a 914-yard year in his junior season, making a key late catch against Penn State in USC’s late Rose Bowl rally. His 10 touchdown catches made up almost a third of the Trojans’ total last year.Smith-Schuster went 44 picks after former teammate Adoree’ Jackson was selected No. 18 overall in the first round on Thursday. The 6-foot-2, 216-pound receiver will join Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, Sammie Coates and Eli Rogers on the Steelers’ crowded receiver corps.last_img read more

2 Detained Chinese Nationals Out on Bail

first_imgTwo Chinese business people who were jailed for more than a day, after they were arrested with building materials that came into the country duty free for the construction of the Monrovia Vocational Training Institute (MVTC), have been freed on bail.Defendant Tim Tim is the owner of China Shan Construction Engineering Group. Her male counterpart Bing Shu Jun, is the owner of WJ Building Materials Store on 15th Street Sinkor, where the duty free items were confiscated. The defendants were bailed late Wednesday evening on the orders of Magistrate Kennedy Peabody after they were arraigned before him to answer to their charges of tax evasion and economic sabotage, which prosecution put the value of the crimes up to US$60,000.The release of the defendants coincided with recent arrests of several Chinese nationals on tax evasion charges. The materials were part of the Chinese Government’s commitment toward the reconstruction of Liberia’s educational facility through the China-Aid Expansion Project. They were arrested on June 22 by officers of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), apparently based on a tip off that the defendants had surprisingly sold the duty free construction materials to Jun’s store.Court documents revealed that co-defendant Tim received several consignments of building materials on duty free for the construction of the MVTC through the China-Aid Expansion Project which building materials were alleged to have been ‘criminally’ conveyed to co-defendant Bing Shu Jun store to be marketed in the country.”The duty free privilege, which was arranged through the initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, was intended for building materials brought in for the reconstruction of the MVTC.The case of the two Chinese sparked widespread criticisms, with some local construction companies wanting government to press charges against them as a deterrent, if the defendants are found guilty of charges against them.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

iCahned: Apple Should Be Wary Of Billionaire Investor “Activist”

first_imgMy fellow guest on the segment, Ned Riley of Riley Asset Management, had no such compunction.“I love it,” Riley said when asked what he made of Icahn’s Apple investment. “I have never seen such a soap opera in my life. He told Tim Cook that he should probably buy back more of Apple’s stock currently, he should probably raise the dividend as part of this cash hoard of $145 billion. I have really never seen anything like it.”Apple’s stock went up 25 points after Icahn’s call to Cook became public (via Icahn’s Twitter account).Of course Icahn’s message to Cook was to return more money to investors. Buy back more stock and give us greater dividends on our quarterly statements, Icahn says. Why? Because he wants to turn his $1 billion in Apple money into much, much more.To be sure, Icahn probably said nothing to Cook about using Apple’s cash supply to increase efficiency in the company’s supply chain, improve working conditions at factories where Apple products are made, increase research and development spending to create the next big product vertical or to buoy the U.S. technology sector. No, Icahn called Cook and said, “show me the money.”Icahn’s Potential Impact On AppleThe good news for Apple fans is that Icahn’s investment in the company should not lead to any real material changes in how the company operates. Computers, iPhones and iPads will still come to market on Apple’s own peculiar timeline. Icahn may have bought a big chunk, but even a $1 billion investment in Apple is only a drop in the bucket compared to the company’s quarterly earnings, market capitalization and cash hoard. Icahn likely won’t be able to push himself on to Apple’s Board of Directors (the way he did with Yahoo five years ago) and set up his own puppet system to get his way. The problem is that we are having this discussion at all. Activist investors like Icahn and Loeb are not activists at all, except for when it comes to cheerleading their own bank accounts. We are not talking about evangelists like Guy Kawasaki (who galvanized the Apple community for years and now does the same for Android at Motorola) or even Robert Scoble who, despite his flaws, at least cares about companies, products and innovation. With Icahn, all we are talking about are merciless Wall Street stooges trying to make even more bang for their already considerable bucks.Icahn does not and cannot give Apple what it needs: a reason to take a risk and transcend into the type of company that takes moonshots on big ideas instead of big profits. Apple leaves the disruptive, interesting products to the likes of Google, Amazon, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk all the while content to take its billions in profits and sit on them for a rainy day. Icahn isn’t going to change Apple for the better. Depending on how vocal he becomes, could definitely change it for the worse. Icahn’s interest will be more in making Apple pay Wall Street. That is what he does and that is what he is good at. And that helps no one except Carl Icahn. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Apple#Carl Icahn#Tim Cook Related Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostingcenter_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Carl Icahn called Tim Cook. The reactions to this relatively simple act between an investor and the CEO of Apple were notable, depending on what side of the country you were on. On the East Coast, Wall Street investors perked up their heads, took little bottles of scotch out of their desks and saluted Icahn, the billionaire “activist” investor that was making Apple’s stock soar. dan rowinski On the West Coast, the denizens of San Francisco and Silicon Valley shook their heads, muttered “not this guy again,” and went off to brewpubs to complain about greedy investors stifling innovation while tweeting from their iPhones. Icahn has a history of meddling. Ask Michael Dell. Icahn has been battling Dell about the terms of taking the struggling computer maker private. The pitch has been a very public, very turbulent war where Icahn is looking for little more than as big a cut as he can get from the company. Icahn also famously pushed himself onto the board of Yahoo in 2008. That did not really work out for anybody.Icahn and his cronies (such as fellow activist investor Dan Loeb) like to target high volume, large asset companies, try to pump up their stocks and margins and then cash out, leaving the company worse for wear. Icahn is the wannabe puppet master that will whine and cry until he gets his way and when he finally does, he will pad his wallet and walk away.See alsoMichael Dell Discovers A New Ring Of Hell: Carl IcahnHow is this guy good for anything other than the sharks on Wall Street that love to watch his slash and burn campaigns and profit in the process? The Bulls & Bears Love Icahn’s Apple InvestmentThe other night I shot an on-air segment for New England Cable News (NECN) on the topic of BlackBerry’s potential sale and the forthcoming iPhone 5S. In the lead up to the segment, I was asked if I wanted to comment on Carl Icahn’s $1 billion investment in Apple and subsequent call with Cook and tweets announcing the purchase. I declined. I am generally not interested in the wanderings of Wall Street activists because I know they are interested only in the top 1% of the 1% of the richest people in the United States (namely, themselves). last_img read more
